A Brief Introduction of Heat Sink

What is Heat Sink?

Heat sink is a cooling device for electronic components easy to heat in electrical equipments. Most of them are made of aluminum alloy, brass or bronze into plates or flakes, such as the sizable heat sink computer CPU central processing unit needs, and power amplifier tubes of power tubes, switching transistors, and power amplifiers in televisions need.

Generally, when the heat sink is being used, the contact surface between electronic components and heat sink should be coated with a layer of thermal grease, enabling more effective conduction of heat from components into heat sink and distribution of heat from components into the air.
Classification of Heat Sink

As far as heat sink material, thermal conductivity properties of each material are different. As heat-conducting property flows from high to low, namely, silver, copper, aluminum, steel. However, silver costs much for heat sink. So it is the best option to use copper. Although aluminum heatsink is much cheaper, apparently its thermal conductivity property is worse than copper's (about 50% of copper's).

Nowadays, the common heat sink material is copper and aluminum. Both of them have advantages as well as disadvantages. Thermal conductivity of copper is good, but it is more expensive with higher processing difficulty, and over large weight (many pure copper heat sinks' weight exceeds the weight limit of CPU). Besides, copper heat sink enjoys smaller heat capacity, and prone to oxidation. On the other side, pure aluminum is too soft to use so that only aluminum alloy can provide enough hardness. The advantages of aluminum alloy are cheap and in light weight, but the disadvantage is its bad thermal conductivity. Some heat sinks take what they need. Thus some aluminum heatsinks are implanted a piece of copper plate.
For ordinary users, the aluminum heat sink has been sufficient to meet their thermal requirements. In the North, the heating radiator for getting warm in winter is also known as the heatsink.

Heat sink occupies an important role in the composition of radiator. Other than active cooling of the fan, to evaluate a heat sink largely depends on the heat absorption capacity and heat conduction of the heat sink itself.

Aluminum Extruded Heat Sink

This is excellent material widely used in modern thermal dissipation. Most of the industry is using 6063 T5 high-quality aluminum, whose purity can reach more than 98%, heat conduction ability is strong, density is small, and price is low so that it has been favored by the major manufacturers. Based on hot resistance of Intel and AMD CPU and considerations of their heat productivity, aluminum extrusion manufacturers develop corresponding mold, heat up aluminum ingots to a certain temperature, make its physical form changed, and then get various types of heat sink raw materials we want. At last, we can use them after cutting, grooving, polishing, burring, cleaning, and surface processing.
